DARPA wants to help people...cook!?
DukeRem1 February 2023
A DARPA programme of great interest is the one known as Perceptually-enabled Task Guidance (PTG). Military personnel are required to perform a huge number of tasks, for which it is not always possible to have sufficient training. One only has to think of the emergency rescue to be carried out in the field to wounded comrades, or the need to repair damaged vehicles or equipment while in critical situations and without adequate technical support. The PTG programme aims to make combined use of AI and augmented reality in order to be able to provide anyone, at any time, with the most detailed and contingent instructions possible, related to the specific situation. The title I have given this news item is not accidental (although it is deliberately funny). In fact, in this first phase, the system is being tested precisely in the culinary field, an area where there is a lot of complexity despite the existence of recipes (just think of the many specific tools that can be used in the kitchen, or the enormous variety of substances, which can be in various states: liquid, solid... or even change state with specific processes). The programme clearly has enormous potential and you can see for yourself by watching the following video. https://youtu.be/pEM8gcRkA7M
