Spain joins the queue investigating GPT
DukeRem13 April 2023
The #Spanish #Data #Protection #Agency (#AEPD ) has called for a thorough evaluation of the #ChatGPT software by the #EU data protection committee. This request comes in response to Italy's temporary ban on the use of this AI system, which the AEPD fears may pose a threat to user data protection. According to a spokesperson for the AEPD, "global processing operations that could have a significant impact on people's rights require coordinated decisions at the European level." The agency has therefore called for ChatGPT to be included on the agenda of the next meeting of the European Data Protection Committee to ensure harmonized actions in the framework of the General Data Protection Regulation. The AEPD's concerns about ChatGPT are not unfounded. As journalist Ricardo de Querol has pointed out, AI systems like ChatGPT "learn" from the data they are trained on, which means they may inherit the biases and prejudices of their human creators. Moreover, there is a risk that such systems could replace human labor, including that of journalists, and erode democratic institutions. The AEPD's move is just the latest example of growing scrutiny of AI systems and their potential impact on society. As these technologies become more widespread, it is essential that we continue to ask tough questions about their ethical implications and take steps to ensure that they are used in ways that benefit all of us. The future of AI may be uncertain, but one thing is clear: we cannot afford to let it develop unchecked.
