Silicon Valley AI Takes Over Defense Sector
AI Majors Form Alliances With U.S. Department of Defense to Explore New Growth and Innovation Opportunities

Silicon Valley’s big AI companies, from Meta to OpenAI, are moving closer and closer to the U.S. Department of Defense, creating a new front of alliances. Deepening ties between the tech industry and the military are turning defense into a strategic area for AI companies to grow.

Key points:

  •  Leading AI companies forge alliances with the U.S. Department of Defense.
  •  Growing financial pressure is driving companies to explore contracts with the military.
  •  AI, a “critical” technology, is at the center of new DoD initiatives.
  •  Despite internal protests, more and more AI companies are reviewing their policies and approaching the defense sector.

In recent months, some of Silicon Valley’s leading AI companies have begun to deepen ties with the U.S. Department of Defense, a move that marks a significant shift from the past, when the tech sector avoided collaborating for military purposes. These alliances have also intensified because of the growing need for financial resources to support the development of advanced technologies, such as generative AI, which requires large investments. The Department of Defense, with its nearly unlimited budget, represents one of the most promising sources of revenue for these companies, which are facing the difficult challenge of justifying the costs of developing highly specialized AI. Although entering the defense sector brings regulatory challenges and rigorous certifications, the opportunities for long-term multimillion-dollar contracts and access to substantial financial resources make this an attractive path. In particular, companies such as Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic and Mistral are exploring solutions for military applications ranging from administrative process automation to cybersecurity and visual intelligence, with ambitions to improve existing systems such as drones, robotic vehicles and tanks. In fact, AI is seen by the DoD as a “critical technology” to dominate future conflicts, with the goal of applying it on a large scale to collect, sort and analyze data, as well as enhance research and decision-making capabilities. The push toward military AI has also been facilitated by a cultural shift within the technology companies themselves, which once held strict positions against involvement in defense. Google, Meta, and OpenAI, which initially promised not to earmark their technologies for military purposes, now seem willing to revise these commitments, with greater openness toward collaborations with the government and the Pentagon, removing previous restrictions. The prospect of getting billion-dollar government contracts and being part of a new, AI-focused phase of technology is making defense an increasingly attractive sector for Silicon Valley tech companies. Not only does this shift affect the research and development of technology solutions, but it is also part of a changing political environment, where the Trump administration, backed by influential figures such as Elon Musk, is seeking to strengthen U.S. technological capabilities, including by strengthening ties with private industry. With artificial intelligence becoming an increasingly strategic asset, interest in Defense Department contracts is likely to increase, bringing with it new opportunities and challenges. Despite technical limitations and the need to ensure security, the large-scale use of AI in the military context seems to be an inevitable step toward the future of defense. The landscape is constantly changing, but the role of the technology sector in national security is set to grow exponentially in the coming years.

In the face of these dynamics, it is expected that the integration of AI and defense will continue to develop, fueled by the need for innovation and the economic opportunities arising from involvement in the military.
