More voices, customizations and a renewed design to improve the user experience

OpenAI has introduced the new Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT’s paying customers, extending audio functionality and enhancing the user experience. With a revamped design, more voices and optimized accents, AVM will gradually be available for Plus and Teams levels, with more updates coming for Enterprise and Edu users.

Key Points:

  •  AVM features an updated design with an animated blue sphere replacing the previous black dots.
  •  Five new voices are available, bringing the total number to nine, all with nature-inspired names.
  •  Advanced voice mode supports more than 50 languages and improves understanding of accents.
  •  AVM’s implementation is not yet available in some regions, including the EU and UK.

OpenAI has begun rolling out Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) for ChatGPT paying users, offering a more natural and fluid user experience. The new feature will be available initially to customers on the Plus and Teams plans, while those on the Enterprise and Edu levels will receive access the following week. New features include a completely revamped design to represent voice mode: instead of the previous animated black dots, the interface now features an animated blue sphere. Users will be notified of AVM availability via a pop-up within the ChatGPT app, next to the voice icon.

Over the course of the week, the update will be gradually rolled out to all customers subscribing to the Plus and Team plans. Concurrently, OpenAI has enriched the offering by including additional customizations such as Custom Instructions, which allow ChatGPT responses to be tailored to user preferences, and the Memory feature, which allows the system to store and recall information from previous conversations.

One of the highlights of this update is the introduction of five new items: Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce and Vale, joining the existing ones-Breeze, Juniper, Cove and Ember-bringing the total number of available voices to nine. The choice of names, inspired by nature, seems to allude to the desire to make interaction with ChatGPT increasingly intuitive and harmonious. However, the entry “Sky,” shown during a previous spring update, is not included due to legal issues related to its perceived resemblance to the voice of Scarlett Johansson, star of the movie “Her.” Following a legal threat, OpenAI promptly removed that voice, stating that there was no intention to imitate the actress.

Despite AVM’s launch, some multimodal features unveiled in the spring, such as video and screen sharing, are still not available. These features would have allowed GPT-4 to handle visual and audio input simultaneously, such as recognition of writings or codes shown in real time. OpenAI has not yet provided an official timeline for the release of these advanced capabilities.

In the meantime, the company has improved voice technology in terms of understanding accents and speed of response, aiming to offer smoother and more accurate conversations. OpenAI acknowledged the presence of some bugs in earlier versions of AVM’s alpha test, but assures that recent updates have improved reliability.

However, AVM will not be immediately available in all regions. Countries that will not yet have access to advanced mode include the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.

With the introduction of advanced voice mode, OpenAI demonstrates its commitment to making ChatGPT an increasingly customizable and natural tool in everyday interaction.
