Baidu, one of China's largest technology companies, has officially launched its AI chatbot called Ernie Bot after receiving approval from the Chinese government. Ernie Bot, similar to ChatGPT developed by OpenAI, can engage in conversational interactions and generate text based on user prompts.
Baidu announced that Ernie Bot surpassed 1 million users within the first 19 hours of its launch. The chatbot is now available for download from app stores globally, though users need a Chinese phone number to register.
Ernie Bot was developed using Baidu's foundation model also named Ernie. Baidu states that the chatbot's launch will allow the company to collect valuable real-world feedback to improve Ernie and bring innovations to Ernie Bot.
The launch comes after Baidu and other Chinese AI companies submitted security assessments to prove compliance with China's guidelines on generative AI. The guidelines require adherence to socialist values and the use of legitimate data sources approved by the government.
