According to Atomico’s annual "State of European Tech 2021" report, Europe is consolidating its position as a global tech powerhouse, with significant progress in investment and startup growth.
New Unicorn Investment and Growth.
Europe has reached a total of $3.8 billion in early-stage investments, making it the second-largest region in the world after the United States, which totaled $4.1 billion. In 2021, the number of European unicorns rose to 321, up from 223 in 2020, with 100 new unicorns minted in the past year alone. This increase brought the total value of European startups to new highs, with an exit value of $250 billion.
Record IPOs and Market Capitalization.
Europe has seen a significant increase in tech IPOs, with 122 new listings compared to 89 in the United States in 2021. European public tech market capitalization has surpassed $2 trillion, adding more than $750 billion in the past 12 months. Romanian company UiPath made one of the most successful IPOs of 2021, debuting at $35.6 billion.
Innovation and Sustainable Investment.
The European fintech sector has seen impressive growth, with investment rising to $21.7 billion in the first nine months of 2021, up from $9.4 billion in 2020. In addition, 17 percent of all funding over the past five years has gone to technology companies geared toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on startups in clean energy and climate.
Persistent Challenges: Funding and Talent
Despite progress, the report highlights persistent challenges in access to finance, especially for women and ethnic minorities. Only 0.7 percent of capital raised since 2020 has gone to black women founders. In addition, talent acquisition remains a significant hurdle for startup founders, with 58 percent of startup founders at seed levels and 64 percent at series A levels reporting increasing difficulty in recruiting.
Conclusion and Future Outlook
The State of European Tech 2021 report points out that despite progress and record growth, Europe still faces structural issues in unlocking the full potential of its tech ecosystem. Recommendations include improving access to finance, increasing inclusiveness and developing smart policies to further support technological innovation.
