Artificial Intelligence Against Phone Scams: Apate, the Australian Bot that Deceives Scammers

 Key Points:
1. Apate: An Australian chatbot that simulates conversations to fool scammers.
2. Advanced Protection: Designed for banks, telephone operators and businesses, it protects customers from scams.
3. Realistic Technology: Uses realistic voices and emotions to extract information about scammers.
4. Scam Sophistication: Scams evolve with deepfakes and AI, making advanced countermeasures necessary.

In Australia, an innovative technological solution is changing the way phone scams are dealt with. The Apate bot, developed by Professor Dali Kaafar’s team at Macquarie University, uses AI to fool phone scammers, gathering useful information to dismantle criminal networks.

A New Tool in the Fight Against Scams.

The Apate chatbot is designed to simulate realistic conversations with phone scammers, using fictitious profiles with voices that vary in age, gender and accent. This advanced technology allows the bot to entertain the scammers, gleaning crucial details about their operations, all while keeping them busy, thus reducing the number of potential real victims.

 How Apate Works

Integrated into telecommunications and enterprise security systems, Apate leverages existing spam call detection technologies. When a suspicious call is identified, the chatbot springs into action, initiating a simulated conversation with the scammer. Thanks to AI, Apate can respond naturally, making the scammer believe he is talking to a real person.

 Phone Scams Today

According to recent data, about 70 million phone scams are conducted globally every day. In 2023, about 25 percent of the world’s population lost money to these scams. However, law enforcement is only able to catch a tiny fraction of the perpetrators, about 0.05%. Scammers are increasingly sophisticated, using advanced technologies such as deepfakes to create fake videos and audios of celebrities promoting products or requesting personal information.

 Supporting the Fight Against Scammers.

The Apate project has received funding of about $720,000 from Australia’s Office of National Intelligence, enabling the development of hundreds of thousands of fictitious profiles with different personalities and emotions. This not only helps protect individuals, but also provides valuable information to law enforcement about the tactics used by fraudsters, who often operate within international criminal organizations.

 Advice from the Postal Police

Authorities advise not to respond to suspicious calls or messages and to block the number immediately. Apate represents another step forward, offering a technological solution to respond to scammers without risk, allowing potential victims to be protected by artificial intelligence that replaces them in dangerous conversations.

 A Future with Fewer Scams

As technology advances, scams are becoming more sophisticated, but countermeasures are also evolving. Apate is an example of how AI can be used not only to protect people, but also to gather useful information to combat criminal organizations at their root.
