MICROSOFT AND APPLE RELINQUISH OPENAI BOARD SEATS AS COLLABORATION ON AI CONTINUES

Microsoft has decided to give up its observer seat on the OpenAI board, a position it held on a non-voting basis. This decision comes at a time when global regulators are taking a closer look at large tech companies’ investments in artificial intelligence startups. Officially, Microsoft attributed its exit to the "significant progress" made by OpenAI’s new board, making its role redundant.

Apple, on the other hand, has chosen not to take on the initially planned observer role. Instead, OpenAI will adopt a new strategy to engage its key partners, including Microsoft and Apple, through regular meetings led by Sarah Friar, OpenAI’s first CFO, who was appointed in June 2023.

These changes are particularly relevant given the recent turmoil within OpenAI. Microsoft had accepted the observer role after the temporary departure of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in November 2023. Altman was reinstated shortly thereafter due to pressure from OpenAI employees and stakeholders. This incident highlighted the fragile nature of Microsoft’s influence despite its substantial $13 billion investment in OpenAI.

Moreover, Apple’s involvement with OpenAI is likely to deepen through technical collaboration rather than board participation. The integration of ChatGPT into Apple devices is a significant step, demonstrating Apple’s commitment to enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities without direct financial transactions.

Both companies’ cautious approaches reflect a broader tendency to navigate regulatory landscapes while maintaining strategic advantages in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
