INNOVATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS IN EDUCATION : VALDITARA’S PROPOSALS ON AI AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

At the conference "The Artificial School - Evolutionary Age and Technological Evolution," Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara outlined his vision on the integration of AI in education, emphasizing the need for a balanced and informed approach. Valditara outlined how AIpossibly revolutionizes personalized learning and enhances students’ individual abilities, but he also warned of the risks associated with misuse of these technologies.

"We know that many students already rely on AI to translate texts or write essays," the minister said. "However, schools must aim to form autonomous and responsible individuals, and we cannot allow AI to replace the learning process."

To counter this phenomenon, Valditara announced a new training program for teachers focused on the responsible use of AI in the classroom. "Our teachers must be prepared to guide students in the conscious use of technologies, without depending on them to perform their tasks," he stressed.

In addition to AI training, the minister introduced additional measures to limit the use of technology in schools. "I have signed a circular that, starting next school year, prohibits the use of cell phones in any educational setting, from kindergarten to middle school," Valditara announced. "I firmly believe that teaching cannot be based on the use of cell phones."

At the same time, Valditara declared the return of the paper diary for marking homework, partially replacing the electronic register. "I decided to reintroduce the traditional school diary, where students will be able to jot down homework with their own hand," he explained. "The electronic register will continue to be used to inform parents, but we want children to learn to write and manage their assignments themselves."

Finally, the minister unveiled an innovative pilot project, which will be launched in some schools starting in the 2024-2025 school year. "We are launching an experiment with AI-based assistants to explore new ways of personalizing teaching," Valditara concluded. "This project represents a significant step toward more inclusive teaching tailored to each student."

These initiatives mark an important moment of reflection and action for the Italian education system, balancing the potential of technology with the importance of maintaining student autonomy and personal responsibility.
