APPLE JOINS OPENAI BOARD WITH PHIL SCHILLER
Apple has taken an important step in strengthening its partnership with OpenAI. Phil Schiller, head of Apple’s App Store and former head of marketing, is set to join the OpenAI board as an observer, further solidifying the bond between the two companies.
This development follows the announcement made during the last WWDC, where Apple noted the integration of ChatGPT into its devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs, as part of a new suite of AI-based features. Although Schiller has not yet attended any board meetings, his role will be up and running by the end of the year.
The observer role allows Schiller to attend board meetings without voting rights, while still providing a valuable window into OpenAI’s strategic decisions. This puts Apple in an interesting position, considering that Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary funder.
The partnership between Apple and OpenAI is not based on a financial agreement, but rather on the common goal of bringing ChatGPT’s technology to hundreds of millions of Apple users. This agreement could generate new revenue for Apple through App Store commissions for paid versions of ChatGPT.
Apple is also exploring partnerships with other AI companies, such as Google, Anthropic, Baidu, and Alibaba, to offer a wider range of chatbots to its global users. However, uncertainties remain about the launch of these functions in Europe.
Apple’s joining the board of OpenAI clearly demonstrates the company’s commitment to the development and integration of AI into its products.
