AMD introduces the Ryzen 9000 series: cutting-edge desktop processors for gamers and creators. Exceptional performance in gaming and content creation, set to launch in July 2024.

AMD has announced the new Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors, designed to deliver exceptional performance for both gamers and content creators. These processors, equipped with advanced technology, ensure smooth gameplay with high frame rates across a wide range of titles, from AAA blockbusters to eSports favourites. Additionally, creative professionals can fully leverage their potential with the Ryzen 9000 processors, thanks to unparalleled single-threaded and multi-threaded processing capabilities, ideal for 3D modelling, design, animation, and product visualization.

The new Ryzen 9000 desktop processors will be available for DIY customers and SI partners starting July 2024. Below are the technical specifications of the announced models:

AMD Ryzen™ 5 9600X6 / 12Up to 5.4 GHz / 3.9 GHz38MBGen 565W

The Socket AM5 motherboard family introduces two new chipsets, AMD X870E and X870, designed to seamlessly integrate with Ryzen 9000 desktop processors. These chipsets support the latest technologies such as PCIe® 5.0, DDR5, USB4, and WIFI7, ensuring platforms are built to last through 2027 and beyond. Both chipsets offer 44 total PCIe lanes and direct-to-processor PCIe 5.0 NVMe connectivity for optimal transfer speeds. The X870E is distinguished by 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes, with 16 dedicated to graphics, doubling the bandwidth compared to competing platforms when both PCIe 5.0 direct-to-processor storage and graphics are enabled.

AMD also introduces Granite Ridge, next-generation processors powered by the Zen5 architecture, representing the third series for the AM5 socket. These processors will maintain the maximum configuration of 16 cores and 32 threads, supporting SMT (simultaneous multithreading), a feature absent in Intel Core Ultra 200 "Arrow Lake" processors.

The Ryzen 9000 series includes four models: Ryzen 9 9950X, Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 7 9700X, and Ryzen 5 9600X. The Granite Ridge series marks the beginning of the Zen5 lineup, with more models expected to follow. The AM5 package remains unchanged, but the 9000 series uses new Zen5 chiplets and minor changes to the capacitor layout.

According to AMD tests, the Ryzen 9 9950X is up to 23% faster in gaming compared to the Intel Core i9-14900K and outperforms it by 56% in productivity tests. AMD claims a 16% IPC (instructions per clock) uplift for the Zen5 architecture compared to Zen4, with the most significant improvement observed in the Geekbench 5.4 AES test and the smallest in Far Cry 6.

Set to launch on July 31, 2024, the Ryzen 9000 series precedes the debut of the 9000X3D series and Intel’s Core Ultra 200 series, expected in Q4 2024. AMD has yet to announce final pricing.

Highlights:

  • The Ryzen 9000 series offers superior performance in gaming and content creation.
  • Availability starting July 2024 with four main models.
  • Support for PCIe 5.0, DDR5, USB4, and WIFI7.
  • 16% IPC improvement compared to the Zen4 previous gen architecture (where Zen4 was 13% and Zen3 was 19%)
