Authors sue AI firms over use of works in model training
DukeRem10 July 2023
OpenAI and Meta are being accused of copyright infringement by several authors including US #comedian Sarah #Silverman, claiming that their AI models were trained on the authors' works without proper consent. Silverman and two other authors, Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta alleging that ChatGPT and Meta's LLaMA used their books as part of the training data to develop the AI models. The lawsuits argue that since the AI models were able to accurately summarize and discuss the authors' books after being prompted, this indicates the works were part of the datasets used to train the AI systems. The authors claim they did not provide consent for their copyrighted works to be used in this manner. The lawsuits come amid growing concerns from writers about the capabilities of AI models like ChatGPT that may have been trained on copyrighted materials without authorization. If proven, this could establish an important precedent around the need for proper consent from content creators before their works are utilized to advance AI technologies.
