Sparrow is coming from Google!
DukeRem29 January 2023
After the sensational beta of ChatGPT, Google is about to respond with Sparrow, an AI software that will be ChatGPT's direct competitor, set to be released in spring 2023. Sparrow will have unique features that differentiate it from ChatGPT, including the ability to cite sources and to improve itself through reinforcement learning. The competition between ChatGPT and Sparrow will probably push the boundaries of AI and its applications in our daily lives.
The public release of ChatGPT was a surprise hit with an explosive impact that some analysts compare to the introduction of the World Wide Web or Apple's iPhone in 2007. And we're just getting started. After igniting the web with its conversational chatbot uses and capabilities, sparking a new debate about the consequences of AI's role in the workforce in the near future, it's clear that the software created by OpenAI is still in its infancy with vast potential for growth and applications, including integration with search engines.
Microsoft understands this, having repeatedly funded the OpenAI tool, with a total investment of $10 billion so far, on a total project value of around three times that amount. The new investment will provide OpenAI with the necessary capital to continue improving ChatGPT and further solidify Microsoft's position in the generative AI space, not only to extend its core business software products but also to help its search engine Bing to finally compete with Google.
Google itself has recently sounded the alarm, with co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page returning to the forefront to combat the now concrete threat of ChatGPT. Their response is Sparrow, an AI software that will be ChatGPT's direct competitor. Demis Hassabis, head of DeepMind, the AI company under Alphabet, Google's parent company, revealed this in an interview with Time. He stated that the company is developing a test version of Sparrow that could be released in the spring of 2023. Hassabis claims that this software has features that ChatGPT lacks, including the ability to cite sources through reinforcement learning. Sparrow is not a new development, with a public whitepaper describing it dating back to September 2020, but at the time it did not receive much attention.
It's clear that the massive hype around the release of ChatGPT, which in its first week of November had over 1 million users, has likely accelerated the development of Sparrow, which is just one of DeepMind's many projects, including AlphaFold, the AI that in 2020 demonstrated the ability to precisely determine the so-called protein folding and accurately predict protein structures. Google's natural language processing software will have unique features that differentiate it from its direct competitor, Hassabis noted, going as far as to say that it's better than ChatGPT because, when given the same user queries, it can produce more accurate responses. One key difference is that Sparrow can learn from its mistakes through reinforcement learning, it can learn even without humans explicitly telling it if an answer is right or wrong by interpreting other parameters as positive or negative reinforcement. However, the differences between the two systems wouldn't stop there, ChatGPT updated its database at the end of 2021 but it is not directly connected to the web. Sparrow, with its close connection to Google, can draw on vast amounts of information and data to provide more accurate responses.
It remains to be seen which of these AI systems will come out on top, but one thing is certain, the competition between ChatGPT and Sparrow will push the boundaries of what is possible with AI and its applications in our daily lives.
