Can a camera exist without a lens?
DukeRem1 June 2023
Meet #Paragraphica, an #AI based camera that attempts to "visually" reconstruct the essence of a place through the limited perception of machine intelligence. Created by researchers Rowan Zellers and Matthew Lungren, Paragraphica consists of both a physical #camera #prototype and a web-based version.
When pointed at a location, the camera generates a “photo” by synthesizing data from map APIs, weather reports and other sources into a descriptive paragraph. This text is then fed into an AI image model (#text-to-image) which attempts to create a visual representation of the words.
The resulting images are strange and uncanny, resembling the location in fleeting glimpses and affective textures.
“The photos never really look exactly like where I am,” notes Lungren. And yet they still manage to evoke something profound - a luminous snapshot of meaning sculpted from raw data. The three dials allow users to tweak the AI’s perception, controlling parameters like the spatial radius and noise levels. With higher “guidance”, the images more closely follow the input text.
But at lower settings, they become blurrier and more abstract. For Lungren, Paragraphica serves as a metaphor for how AI may perceive the world differently from humans. “We will have limited imagination of how they see,” he says. The camera thus offers a window into the intelligence of machines, indicating how meaning can emerge from unlikely sources and alternative perspectives. In locating vision beyond the optical, Paragraphica demonstrates how AI may reconstruct essence from fragments, reorganizing reality into new scintillating vistas of significance.
