Amazon will develop AI-generated conversational ads within Alexa+ interactions, offering new ways to discover products and generate advertising revenue. The service is already available to millions, with subscription models and plans for ad-free solutions in the future.

Key Points:

  • Andy Jassy Announces Advertising Integration into Multi-Turn Conversations with Alexa+
  • Alexa+ is already available to millions of users (including Prime members)
  • Current subscription model: Free with Prime or $20/month, with an "ad-free" plan being considered
  • Concerns about Accuracy, Privacy, and Potential Misinformation

During the Q2 2025 earnings conference call, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy outlined his intention to incorporate ads into multi-turn conversations between users and Alexa+, aiming to facilitate product discovery and generate additional advertising revenue. Alexa+ has already been deployed to millions of customers and represents the evolution of the traditional voice assistant towards an agentic and conversational system, competitive with solutions from OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity.

Alexa+ is currently free for Prime members ($14.99 per month) and also available as a standalone subscription for around $20 per month; Jassy has suggested the future introduction of alternative tiers, including an ad-free plan. Currently, advertising on Alexa appears only occasionally—for example, on the Echo Show or as audio ads between songs—but the idea is to dynamically insert them directly into conversations.

Amazon has pushed massively towards investing in AI infrastructure: in Q2 alone, it allocated $31.4 billion to the development of proprietary chips and new data centers, a 90% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Advertising revenue grew 22% year over year, highlighting the importance of the sector to supporting AI expansion.

Many marketing experts see conversational advertising as a promising model; the way Alexa+ will generate these ads—organically integrating them into its responses—could open up new avenues for brands and advertisers, though it remains somewhat uncharted territory for the industry.

However, critics point to some challenges: Alexa+, like many generative models, can generate incorrect responses (hallucinations), so information reliability must be ensured before promoting products through it. Furthermore, integrating ads into personal conversations raises sensitive privacy issues, as generative chatbots tend to collect more data than traditional assistants. Some users may feel uncomfortable if their data is used to target ads within the conversational flow.

The initial rollout of Alexa+ has received mixed feedback: some users reported slow responses or difficulty using it, while Amazon continues to fine-tune the experience based on data collected during the early access phases. Meanwhile, competitors like Google and OpenAI are also exploring advertising models for their conversational AI experiences, highlighting a paradigm shift in the AI economic model.

Amazon is focusing on innovative advertising integration within its conversational digital assistant Alexa+, potentially boosting monetization and product discovery, but will face issues related to system accuracy and respect for user privacy.
