ChatGPT becomes a tutor: the new study mode arrives for real learning | Chat GPT login free | ChatGPT 4 | OpenAI Playground | Turtles AI
A new learning mode that guides students through study step-by-step with reflection and interactive quizzes to foster deeper understanding through Socratic questioning.
Key points:
- Available starting today (July 29, 2025) for ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, coming to ChatGPT Edu in the coming weeks.
- Structured answers with guiding questions, suggestions, and self-reflection, not just solutions.
- Customizes the learning path based on the user’s level, memories of previous chats, and objectives.
- Includes quizzes, knowledge checks, and personalized feedback along the way.
ChatGPT’s new study mode is designed as a virtual tutor that trains students in active participation. Rather than immediately providing complete solutions, it prompts discussion with questions for clarification and further study inspired by the Socratic method, encouraging self-assessment and curiosity. Answers are divided into clear sections that highlight logical connections between concepts, maintaining a balance between context and simplicity to avoid overloading concentration on complex topics.
Developed in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogical experts, the study mode manages cognitive load, promotes metacognition, and offers concrete and supportive guidance, based on best practices established in educational research. In initial tests, university students appreciated the clarity of the explanations and the tutor’s continuous availability: a three-hour session allowed one student to master sinusoidal positional encodings, after repeated failed attempts with traditional methods.
The goal is to redefine the use of ChatGPT in an educational context, discouraging its use as a shortcut to homework and instead promoting critical thinking and real-world learning. It is available via a "Study" or "Learn" icon in the chat window, but users can easily deactivate it (thus requiring internal motivation to maintain it).
As a competitive environment, Google and Anthropic are launching similar tools (Google Search with Educational AI Mode, Claude’s Learning Mode), while OpenAI is collaborating with edtechs in India and the US to create custom applications based on ChatGPT APIs. OpenAI is also planning long-term studies with Stanford’s SCALE initiative to measure the effectiveness of AI in education and share findings on how model design impacts cognitive processes.
Currently, Study Mode relies on personalized system instructions—a rapid approach that allows for adjustments based on real-world feedback, even at the cost of occasional consistency. In the future, OpenAI plans to incorporate this behavior directly into core models to streamline the experience. Improvements planned include advanced visualizations, progress tracking across conversations, and personalized adaptive goals.
Study Mode marks a significant step toward AI that supports learning through active engagement.
