Google has begun rolling out Android 16 to Pixel devices on June 10, 2025, with features like Live Updates, AI editing in Photos, VIP widgets, and RCS group chats. “PixelDrop” adds accessible, customizable tools to the experience.

Key Points:

  • Live Updates: Real-time notifications on the lock screen and status bar.
  • AI Suggestions in Google Photos: “delete,” “move,” “reinvent” tools.
  • PixelVIP widgets: Favorite contacts with Do Not Disturb management and updates.
  • RCS group chats and Wallet business badges: Better messaging and professional support.

Google has shipped Android 16 (codenamed “Baklava”) to Pixel devices on June 10, 2025, an update that comes months ahead of its traditional annual cycle, introducing iOS-like lock screens with Live Updates, and letting you track deliveries, taxis, or persistent notifications in real time right from the status bar. The design adopts the Material3 Expressive aesthetic: dynamic themes, fluid animations and improved visual styles, with a full rollout expected in the months. In terms of accessibility, new features have been introduced for LE Audio devices, including the ability to use Bluetooth Low Energy headphones as an external microphone and control their volume directly, as well as hearing aid support with high-contrast text and automatic redaction of sensitive notifications. For privacy and security, Android 16 includes advanced anti-fraud modes, USB port blocking, reset-resistant offline mode, protection for public figures and intelligent battery monitoring.

The Pixel ecosystem gets a boost with June’s “PixelDrop”: the PixelVIP widget lets you follow calls, messages (including WhatsApp), birthdays, location and notifications in one tap, bypassing Do Not Disturb while keeping the data on the device; Gboard now includes an AI tool to create custom stickers from text or photos; the Recorder app supports audio summaries in French and German; the Magnifier improves accessibility via visual search; and Satellite SOS arrives in Australia for the emergency via satellite connectivity. Amateur and professional photographers will appreciate the new camera options, with Ultra HDR support, HEIC / UltraHDR encoding and a desktop mode for tablets similar to DeX, still in the preview phase. Google Photos expands the AI editor: intelligent suggestions such as selective blur, object removal, Auto Frame, Reimagine and tools such as "erase" and "reinvent" for quick retouching, also available on Android and soon on iOS. Finally, Google Messages gets group chat via RCS with custom emojis and mute notifications; Google Wallet welcomes company badges; while on WearOS you can use badges for public transport.

The updates, released via OTA in geographical phases, also include security patches dated June 1 and 5, with fixes for fingerprint, camera, Bluetooth, connectivity and more on the entire Pixel range from 6 to 9a.

The Android 16 QPR1 update will be the only “app-impacting” update of 2025, while further releases (minor or desktopization) are expected by the end of the year.
