Amazon Web Services (AWS) and HUMAIN, the Saudi AI innovation company, have announced an investment of over $5 billion to establish an AI Zone in Saudi Arabia. This strategic investment will help accelerate AI adoption in the Kingdom and globally, in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals.

Key Points:

  • AWS and HUMAIN invest $5 billion to establish an “AI Zone” in Saudi Arabia.
  • The partnership includes the integration of advanced services such as Amazon SageMaker, Bedrock, and Q.
  • The project aims to strengthen the training and development of local talent in the field of AI.
  • The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aims to become a global leader in AI adoption by 2030.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and HUMAIN, a new Saudi entity focused on AI innovation, announced a significant joint investment of more than $5 billion to build an advanced technology zone in Saudi Arabia. The “AI Zone” is an initiative that brings together AWS infrastructure, AI services, and education to make the Kingdom a key player in the global AI ecosystem. The zone, which will use next-generation AWS servers and high-performance semiconductors, will increase access to generative AI services, including Amazon SageMaker, Bedrock, and Amazon Q, to help enterprises, startups, and the Saudi public sector build advanced solutions. This project is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the economy and position the country among the major players in the global technology landscape.

As part of this agreement, HUMAIN will focus on developing AI applications using resources provided by AWS. The two companies will also collaborate to create a centralized marketplace of AI agents, simplifying access and implementation of advanced solutions for the Saudi government. Among the strategic objectives of this alliance is the promotion of Large Language Models (LLM), including language models dedicated to the Arabic language, with the aim of facilitating the expansion of generative AI in various sectors, including government, healthcare, education and energy. The integration of these tools in the public sector will help improve the efficiency of services and generate value in key areas such as early diagnosis of diseases, personalization of learning and automation of bureaucratic processes.

An essential part of this strategy also includes a significant investment in training local talent. AWS has announced a collaboration with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, with the aim of training at least 100,000 Saudi citizens in cloud computing and AI, with a specific focus on certifying skills in genAI, through the Amazon Academy. This training program is designed to prepare the next generation of Saudi professionals to enter the workforce with advanced skills in emerging technologies. In addition, a specific initiative has been designed to increase female participation in the technology sector, with free courses dedicated to 10,000 women, aimed at acquiring skills in cloud computing and AI.

This ambitious project, which goes well beyond the technological infrastructure, is configured as a growth engine for the entire Saudi startup ecosystem. AWS will make its portfolio of scalable and secure cloud solutions available to young local companies, with the aim of encouraging the growth of new entrepreneurial realities in the AI sector. With a vision focused on supporting startups, AWS, through the AWS Activate program, aims to provide emerging companies with the resources needed to innovate and develop advanced AI applications. Supporting startups is a crucial element for the Kingdom’s economic growth, especially considering that in 2024, Saudi startups attracted record investments, with a capital flow of $750 million.

The partnership between AWS and HUMAIN is therefore a milestone in Saudi Arabia’s digital transformation journey, which aims to create a fertile environment for the adoption and development of AI, thus responding to the ambitious goals of the Vision 2030 plan.

By integrating advanced cloud technologies and promoting new skills in the country, Saudi Arabia is preparing to become a global reference center in the field of AI, fueling innovation and economic growth throughout the Middle East region.
