Intel is focusing its efforts on developing its own AI chips in an attempt to challenge Nvidia. New CEO Lip-Bu Tan has outlined a strategy that aims to evolve existing products, with no immediate plans for acquisitions.
Key points:
- Intel is developing a new line of AI chips in-house, aiming to compete with Nvidia in the data center market.
- CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the strategy will focus on evolving existing products to address emerging trends, such as robotics and autonomous agents.
- Intel intends to take a similar approach to Nvidia, offering integrated solutions that combine chips, hardware and software.
- There are no acquisitions planned in the near term; the priority is to improve the balance sheet and develop in-house solutions.
After years of unsuccessful attempts to enter the AI market through acquisitions, Intel has decided to embark on a new strategy, focusing on in-house development to challenge Nvidia’s leadership in the sector. CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over from Pat Gelsinger in March 2025, outlined a plan to evolve Intel’s existing products to address new AI market needs, such as robotics and autonomous agents. Tan noted that this approach will take time and effort, but is the company’s strategic direction.
Intel has historically attempted to enter the AI market by acquiring AI startups, such as Nervana, Habana Labs and Movidius. However, these attempts have not yielded the desired results, leaving room for competitors such as Nvidia, which has built an integrated ecosystem of chips, software and data centers. To address this challenge, Intel has decided to develop in-house solutions that combine hardware and software, aiming to offer complete platforms for customers.
CFO David Zinsner said that in the short term, Intel will not make any more acquisitions, instead focusing on improving its balance sheet and developing in-house solutions. This indicates a long-term commitment to strengthening the company’s position in the AI market
Industry analysts note that while Intel’s strategy may have potential, Nvidia’s dominant position and the efforts of other major technology companies, such as Amazon and Google, to develop AI chips pose significant challenges for Intel. However, Intel’s approach could offer viable alternatives for customers looking for integrated and customizable solutions.
Intel is embarking on a new phase in its AI efforts, focusing on internal development to compete with Nvidia and other industry leaders. It will be interesting to watch how this strategy evolves and what impact it will have on the AI market in the coming years.
