An innovative AI-based chatbot, Sonny, aims to support student mental health when school personnel are not sufficient. By integrating AI and human supervision, the system ensures accessible, personalized and safe support while facilitating access to qualified professionals.
Key points:
- AI-based chatbot with human supervision for student mental health support
- Available 24/7 to offer immediate assistance via text messages
- Early identification of signs of distress through machine learning
- Collaboration with schools and professionals to refer students for specialized care
The growing need for psychological care among students is leading schools to look for innovative solutions to fill the shortage of school counselors. This is where Sonny, a chatbot developed by the startup Sonar Mental Health, comes in, designed to provide a first level of support for kids in need. The platform combines artificial intelligence and human supervision: each textual interaction is processed by an algorithm that proposes responses, which are then validated and dispatched by mental wellness professionals. This hybrid approach makes it possible to offer a service that is available at any time, reducing wait times and ensuring an empathetic and safe interaction.
Currently adopted in several school districts and accessible to thousands of students, Sonny is distinguished by its ability to detect early signs of distress through analysis of conversations and, with user consent, also through insights from social media. In the event of a critical situation or need for more in-depth support, the system facilitates contact with qualified specialists, simplifying reporting processes and ensuring quick access to available resources.
To ensure maximum effectiveness and adherence to student needs, the project also relies on direct input from the students themselves, thanks to the Changemakers Advisory Board, a group of young people who work with the developers to constantly refine the user experience of the platform. Schools, thanks to this technology, can have a scalable and affordable solution to improve student well-being while fostering a more peaceful and productive environment.
In a landscape where the demand for psychological support often exceeds available resources, tools such as Sonny are a useful addition to ensure that no student is alone in facing their difficulties.
