Non invasive brain-machine interface
DukeRem17 April 2023
AI will deploy its full potential when it will be fully integrated into everyday life. Some people think it would be cool to embed it into humans...directly. Researchers have developed a #breakthrough in #brain-machine interfaces (#BMIs) through the use of micropatterned sensors based on subnanometer-thick epitaxial graphene. These three-dimensional sensors have shown efficient on-skin contact with low impedance and can achieve comparable signal-to-noise ratios against wet sensors, making them a viable alternative for EEG monitoring. Specifically, the sensors have been successful in detecting the EEG signal from the challenging occipital region of the scalp, corresponding to the visual cortex of the brain. This breakthrough has led to the successful demonstration of a full BMI system to control a quadruped robot via the steady-state visually evoked potential paradigm, with an accuracy of 94%. While the matching of the signal acquisition performance of wet Ag/AgCl sensors with that of dry sensors is still challenging, this development represents a solid step forward in the large-scale deployment of BMIs.
