2025 will be a pivotal year for Meta and its Reality Labs division, which focuses on the development of VR visors, smart glasses, and AI-based devices. Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta, highlighted the need to increase sales, retention and engagement, especially in mixed reality, to prevent the metaverse from turning into a momentous failure.
Key points:
- Strategic turn: Reality Labs needs to prove its worth after multi-billion dollar losses.
- Focus on mixed reality: Horizon Worlds on mobile must establish itself to secure the future of the ecosystem.
- Operational efficiency: Small agile teams perform better than more structured groups.
- Mentality of excellence: 2025 represents a unique opportunity to make a mark in the technology sector.
Reality Labs, Meta’s dedicated hardware and metaverse department, is at a crossroads: 2025 will determine whether the company’s colossal investments will pay off or turn into a historic failure. Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s CTO and division head, told employees via a confidential memo that the coming year will be the most decisive in his eight years at the company. In the memo, titled “2025: The Year of Greatness,” he stresses the importance of improving sales, engagement, and user retention, with a focus on mixed reality, where products such as Quest visors and the Horizon Worlds platform must prove their worth. In parallel, the company plans to launch a new wave of AI-based wearable devices, an area Meta is focusing on heavily.
Although 2024 has been dubbed internally as the most successful year for Reality Labs, Bosworth warns that the achievements to date are not enough. In fact, the division has not yet achieved enough impact to make a mark on the technology sector. Comparisons with the past are inevitable: in his message to employees, the CTO cites Steven Levy’s book “Insanely Great,” which chronicles the birth of the Macintosh and the tireless work of small teams that improved consumer computing. Bosworth then urges staff to keep their motivation high and adopt a mindset of excellence, saying that greatness is not a fortuitous event, but the result of constant effort.
A key aspect the memo focuses on is operational efficiency. The executive noted how leaner, less structured teams are often more productive than those with greater resources, emphasizing that agility is key to getting real results. Avoiding red tape and excessive meetings therefore becomes essential to focus on the main objective: creating products that can stand out and offer real value to consumers.
Meta’s future in the metaverse remains uncertain. Reality Labs has accumulated losses of about $60 billion since 2020, a figure that weighs on the division’s sustainability. To ensure the success of the company’s entire vision, the launch and adoption of Horizon Worlds on mobile devices, which is considered an important piece in the long-term strategy, will be crucial.
The company is aware of the pressure it is under: 2025 will be the ultimate test case, the moment when it will become clear whether Meta’s metaverse will be remembered as a success or a resounding failure.
