AWS is targeting Ohio with a $10 billion investment to support AI and cloud computing. The project will create hundreds of direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs, strengthening the local economy, infrastructure, and sustainable technology training.

Key Points:

  • Investing $10 billion by 2030 to expand AWS data centers in Ohio.
  • Creating hundreds of direct jobs and supporting thousands of indirect jobs.
  • Focusing on energy sustainability with wind and solar projects.
  • Developing the workforce with education programs and scholarships.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a massive $10 billion investment to strengthen its cloud computing infrastructure and support the growing demand for AI in the state of Ohio. This expansion plan, planned by 2030, will not only lead to the creation of new data centers, but will help consolidate Ohio as a hub for technological innovation.

The investment is part of a long-term strategy that has already seen AWS dedicate more than $6 billion through 2022 and another $7.8 billion in 2023. The goal is to meet the growing need for advanced computing power, essential for both traditional cloud applications and AI and machine learning workloads. Through this initiative, AWS aims to create hundreds of direct jobs for specialized professionals, including data center engineers, network experts, and security specialists. At the same time, thousands of indirect jobs, in sectors such as telecommunications, maintenance, and energy production, will support the local economy.

The importance of efficient digital infrastructure was also highlighted by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who highlighted how data centers have become essential to the modern economy, helping to keep the state competitive on a global level. Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted further highlighted the strategic value of AI and data centers for the technological and industrial development of the entire region.

In parallel with the infrastructure growth, AWS has strengthened its commitment to energy sustainability. The company, which has reached the goal of 100% renewable energy in 2023, has invested in 23 solar and wind projects in Ohio. Once completed, these plants will generate more than 2.9 gigawatt hours of clean energy per year, enough to cover the energy needs of more than half a million American homes. This approach aims to balance the environmental impact of data centers and promote a greener energy future.

Another key priority for AWS is the development of the local workforce. With the goal of training the next generation of technology professionals, AWS has introduced a series of targeted educational programs. Among these is the Data Center Technician Training Program at Columbus State Community College, which includes scholarships, paid internships, and hands-on training. Innovative programs like Fusion Splicing, which focuses on fiber optics, and the Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship initiative, prepare students and workers for the skills needed in the cloud infrastructure industry.

AWS goes beyond post-secondary education, but is also actively working with K-12 schools to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education. Events like AWS Girls’ Tech Day and the creation of Think Big Spaces in 20 Ohio schools have exposed thousands of students to basic technology skills, from AI to coding. These projects aim to close the skills gap and build a talent pool ready to tackle the challenges of the digital future.

The announcement of this new investment further strengthens the bond between AWS and Ohio, a partnership that began nearly a decade ago with the first data center in the US East (Ohio) region. In addition to economic and infrastructure investments, AWS continues to be an active and responsible partner in the community, supporting economic growth, skills development, and environmental sustainability.

This expansion not only promotes Ohio as a Midwest technology hub, but also reinforces its central role in digital innovation and the evolution of AI.
