OpenAI brings ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode to the web, a feature that allows users to interact with the chatbot via voice directly from the browser. The innovation, available to subscribers, expands accessibility and interaction, offering natural and adaptive responses.

Key points:

  • Advanced Voice Mode is now available on ChatGPT for web users, as well as iOS and Android.
  • It leverages the power of GPT-4, enhancing interactions with more natural and responsive voice responses.
  •  To use the feature, you must be a ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu subscriber.
  • Daily usage limits for paid users and monthly preview for free users.

OpenAI has announced the expansion of its innovative ChatGPT advanced voice mode, which is now available on the web. The new feature allows users to interact with the popular chatbot using their voice directly from their browser, significantly improving the experience of talking to AI. This evolution follows the debut of voice mode in ChatGPT’s iOS and Android mobile apps, launched in September, and is part of an ongoing refinement of voice interactions, already available in previous versions of the service. Specifically, the feature leverages the advanced audio capabilities of GPT-4, allowing ChatGPT to respond in a more human and natural way, adapting not only to the content of the questions, but also to nonverbal cues such as the rate of speech, with responses that can also vary based on tone and emotion. To start a voice conversation on the web, users need to select the microphone icon in the input window, located in the lower right corner. The browser will then ask for permission to access the microphone, after which the conversation can begin. Once voice mode is activated, the system takes the user to a screen with a blue globe in the center, a symbol representing audio communication. Additionally, users can choose from nine different response voices, each with unique tone and personality characteristics, such as “Arbor,” which is more versatile and relaxed, or “Ember,” which is more confident and performance-oriented.

Access to the advanced voice mode, however, is limited to users with a paid subscription, such as those on the ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Teams, and Edu plans. Users in these categories have a daily usage limit, which can vary, and are notified when they have only 15 minutes of voice use left for the day. For free users, OpenAI has provided a monthly preview mode that allows them to try the feature without having to commit to a subscription. This approach is intended to test public reaction and gradually extend access to voice mode to those who do not have a premium subscription.

The new feature represents a further step towards the evolution of human-machine interaction, making the use of ChatGPT more fluid, natural and engaging.
