AI does not threaten human intelligence, but enhances it, says Yann LeCun during Meta’s Build with AI Summit in India. Open source will be key in the future of AI, with a significant impact on scientific culture and the youth ecosystem.

Key points:

  • AI amplifies human intelligence, not replaces it.
  • Open source will be critical for knowledge access and sharing.
  • India has a key role in AI development and research.
  • Local initiatives stimulate the AI ecosystem and youth careers.

At the first Build with AI Summit organized by Meta in India, AI vice president and chief scientist Yann LeCun reiterated the importance of AI as a tool for enhancing human capabilities rather than as a threat. LeCun described how AI assistants, over time, will get smarter and smarter, but urged not to see them as competition. “Having access to intelligent tools is like having a team of experts by your side,” he said, stressing that everyone, including people in rural India, will benefit from this advancement. The ability to interact with AI in one’s own language is a significant development that can bring remarkable changes in the future. During the summit, LeCun also emphasized the value of open source, arguing that sharing resources and knowledge will be essential to developing a common AI infrastructure that can be accessible to all. This approach, according to LeCun, will not only democratize AI, but also help create an ecosystem in which new generations will have exciting professional opportunities. Recalling the example of the AI research launched in Paris, he highlighted how this initiative has generated momentum for the local ecosystem, transforming the French capital into a major global center for AI startups. However, it is not just Paris that is thriving; Bengaluru is also rapidly establishing itself as a major player in the technology landscape. LeCun noted how the growth of the AI industry can psychologically influence young minds, offering them hope and motivation to contribute to this revolution. During the event, Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys, also shared his views on the importance of AI for India, highlighting the country’s potential not only in producing local technologies but also as a leader in research. The day included a panel discussion devoted to open science and the democratization of AI, with speeches by LeCun and Nilekani, both of whom emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach to harnessing the full potential of AI. During the event, LeCun also awarded the winners of the AI Hackathon, held in Bengaluru, showing Meta’s commitment to fostering local innovation.

The growing focus on AI and continued research could not only transform India’s technology landscape, but also contribute to a future where AI will be an integral part of everyone’s daily life.
