Nvidia reveals the truth about Blackwell defects
The company admits its responsibilities, while TSMC offers support in the resumption of production
Editorial Team24 October 2024

Nvidia recognizes that the design defects of Blackwell architecture are exclusively attributable to their company, excluding any liability of TSMC. Despite the initial difficulties, TSMC’s support allowed a rapid recovery of production. The first Blackwell products are expected for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Key points:

  • Nvidia admits total responsibility for Blackwell defects.
  • TSMC has witnessed the resolution of production problems.
  • Blackwell consists of seven chips designed simultaneously.
  • The first Blackwell products will be shipped in Q4 2024.

Nvidia has recently clarified the situation regarding the design defects of Blackwell architecture, stating that these problems are entirely attributable to their company and not to TSMC, as initially suggested. During an interview, CEO Jensen Huang confirmed that although Blackwell had a design defect that compromised the performance, TSMC did not play any role in the matter. The defect was linked to the low yield of the chips, a complex situation since Blackwell architecture requires the design and simultaneous production of seven different types of chips. Huang stressed that although the defect was internal to Nvidia, Tsmc played an important role in recovering the situation, allowing the company to resume production at a remarkable pace. This support was fundamental to prevent problematic performance rates from having a devastating impact on Nvidia’s activity. With the start of the shipment of Blackwell products scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024, expectations are high regarding the success of this new architecture, which could exceed the anticipation generated by the previous Hopper generation.

Blackwell’s path reflects an effective response from Nvidia to the design challenges, with the strategic support of TSMC.
