A step toward the future of air mobility: the world’s first certified passenger drone-taxi has made its debut in China. Aiming to transform urban travel, EHang got the official green light for its innovative eVTOL EH216-S, promising a fast and autonomous travel experience.

Key points:

  • EHang has received the world’s first certification for passenger transport with its EH216-S drone.
  • The certification process involved more than 1,000 days of testing and more than 40,000 test flights.
  • The flying cab can carry two passengers and reach speeds of up to 100 km/h.
  • China leads the urban air mobility industry as other nations prepare to follow suit.

Chinese company EHang has achieved a major milestone in the field of urban air mobility, having obtained official certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for its EH216-S vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone, the first of its kind to be licensed for passenger transport. This achievement represents a major step forward in a rapidly evolving field dedicated to the realization of autonomous and safe air transport systems. After a lengthy verification process lasting more than three years, the EH216-S has proven to meet rigorous safety and reliability standards, supported by an intensive testing program that included more than 500 specific tests. The tests took place in both controlled environments and real operational situations, analyzing aspects such as material robustness, crash safety, and stability during flight.

The EH216-S drone, designed to operate fully autonomously, is equipped with a lightweight carbon fiber structure and has sixteen electrically powered propellers. It is capable of reaching altitudes of 3,000 meters and a cruising speed of 100 km/h, with the ability to carry two passengers in total comfort. This new type of vehicle is not limited to facilitating point-to-point travel; it is designed for a wide range of applications, ranging from air cab service to tourism support and airport shuttles. The potential for unique and rapid travel experiences is great, opening the door to a future where urban transportation will not only be more efficient, but also more engaging.

Despite EHang’s leadership, other nations such as the United States are investing in making their own flying cabs operational within the next few years, with companies such as Hyundai envisioning a future where aerial vehicles become commonplace. With the emergence of these new technologies, the concept of urban mobility could be radically transformed, enabling passengers to get around quickly, safely and innovatively. This is a transitional phase in the transportation sector, with the potential to make cities more accessible and livable.

EHang’s EH216-S represents not only a technical breakthrough, but also an important step toward a future in which air transportation will become an integral part of everyday life.
