Meta today unveiled Movie Gen, an innovative AI-based video generator capable of creating high-definition movies complete with audio. This announcement comes just months after the debut of Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video model, although the public does not yet have access to Movie Gen. Using text input, Movie Gen can generate new videos or edit existing movies, making content creation accessible and versatile. The technology also integrates an advanced audio system that can combine ambient noises, sound effects, and background music, providing a complete audiovisual experience.

Key points:

  • Video generation and editing: Movie Gen produces video clips up to 16 seconds long, using text prompts for creation and customization.
  • Advanced audio technology: Audio is generated by AI, integrating ambient sounds and music for a more immersive experience.
  • Creative versatility: In addition to creating new videos, it allows edits to existing movies, changing styles, transitions, and adding elements.
  • Intellectual property concerns: The technology raises questions about copyright and responsible use, a topic already debated in the context of AI tools.

Movie Gen’s model is capable of generating high-quality video using a 30-billion-parameter transformer system optimized for text-to-image and text-to-video operations. This capability not only enables the creation of realistic images and videos, but also offers precise and customized editing, allowing both localized and global changes to be made while keeping the original content intact. Unlike traditional tools that require advanced technical skills, Movie Gen aims to make video creation and editing accessible to a wider audience.

In the context of an ever-changing technological landscape, Movie Gen fits into a series of innovations that have already transformed the creative industry. In the past two years, AI tools for image and video generation have gained popularity, bringing to light concerns regarding intellectual property and ethical use of technology. The startup Runaway, for example, trained its video generator on a large database of YouTube videos, raising concerns related to copyright infringement.

Meta, however, points out that Movie Gen was developed using a mix of licensed and publicly available datasets, without going into specific details about which ones were used. Chris Cox, Meta’s product manager, said that the company is not yet ready to publicly launch Movie Gen because of high costs and long generation times. In addition, creatives in various fields, including filmmakers, photographers, and writers, are expressing concern about how these technologies may affect their work, a hot-button issue that emerged during the strikes in Hollywood.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shared a video made with Movie Gen on social media, demonstrating the versatility of the model. The tool, although in the testing phase, has the potential to transform visual and audio content creation, making it more accessible and diverse. The Movie Gen presentation highlights Meta’s commitment to sharing fundamental research in the field of artificial intelligence, aimed at stimulating creativity and providing new opportunities for artistic expression.

The continued evolution of these technologies raises questions about how they will be used in the future and their impact in the creative world.
