OpenAI clarifies: ’GPT Next’ is not a new model, but a figurative concept
The presentation at the KDDI Summit in Japan caused confusion, but OpenAI denies the existence of a model called ’GPT Next’

A recent OpenAI presentation in Japan sparked speculation about an alleged new model called “GPT Next.” However, the company denied it, clarifying that this was a figurative reference to the evolution of AI models, not the announcement of a concrete new version.

Key points:

  •  “GPT Next is not a new model, but a figurative concept.
  •  The Japanese presentation of OpenAI has generated confusion among AI enthusiasts.
  •  The most advanced model of OpenAI currently is GPT-4, with multimodal capabilities.
  •  The future of OpenAI may include tools such as “Project Strawberry.”

Recently, as we announced in one of our previous articles, during the KDDI Summit in Japan, a presentation given by Tadao Nagasaki, head of OpenAI’s Japanese operations, triggered a series of speculations about a supposed new AI model called “GPT Next.” The term, given in quotation marks on a slide, quickly made the rounds on the Web, fueling speculation that OpenAI was on the verge of launching a new version of its celebrated GPT model series. However, an OpenAI spokesperson was quick to clarify the situation, debunking the existence of a model called “GPT Next.” In fact, the term used in the presentation was simply a figurative placeholder designed to illustrate how AI models might evolve exponentially over time.

In fact, the graph shown in Nagasaki’s slide did not represent a concrete timeline of OpenAI’s development plans, but a theoretical example of how AI technology might advance from past performance. Nagasaki stated that future AI models could see nearly 100 times more evolution than previous versions, but he failed to specify whether he was referring to general development of the technology or to a specific project such as the anticipated GPT-5. This ambiguity contributed to further confusion among observers and enthusiasts, many of whom interpreted “GPT Next” as an actual announcement.

Further complicating the picture, OpenAI recently raised interest around a new project called “Project Strawberry.” Although details remain scarce, Strawberry is rumored to represent a step forward in the ability of AI tools to reason autonomously, bridging the gap between current step-by-step instructions and agents capable of performing complex tasks with a single input. However, the hype around Project Strawberry has been tempered by a general decline in investor interest, in part due to the high operational costs associated with AI models and growing criticism from consumers.

Nevertheless, ongoing negotiations between OpenAI and tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft for a new fundraising round show that these companies still see significant potential in the future of AI. With an estimated valuation of $100 billion, OpenAI continues to be a focal point in the global technology landscape. While many look forward to the announcement of new models or tools, such as the potential GPT-5, the lesson learned from the “GPT Next” affair is that the evolution of AI is complex and often misunderstood. Thus, it remains to be seen what OpenAI’s next moves will be.

The recent confusion around “GPT Next” underscores how high expectations and interest are around any new development in the field of AI. However, it is essential to maintain a critical and careful approach to the emerging information and avoid easy conclusions.
