In the second quarter of 2024, global shipments of AI-capable PCs reached 8.8 million units, doubling from the previous quarter and accounting for 14 percent of total PC sales. This significant increase is driven by the growing adoption of AI-optimized hardware, with companies such as Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm introducing advanced chips to improve system performance.

Key Points:

1. Rapid Market Growth: In the second quarter of 2024, shipments of AI-capable PCs reached 8.8 million units, doubling from the previous quarter and accounting for 14 percent of global PC sales.

2. Adoption of Advanced Hardware: Leading chip makers such as Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm are developing AI-optimized processors, contributing significantly to the increase in AI PC sales.

3. Domination of MacOS Sales: PCs with the MacOS operating system dominated the AI PC market in the second quarter, accounting for 60 percent of total shipments, followed by Windows systems with 39 percent.

4. Increase in High Price Bands: High-end Windows AI PCs priced above $800 saw a 127% month-on-month increase in shipments, with Lenovo, HP, and Dell among the top sellers.

The increase in sales of AI-capable PCs in the second quarter of 2024 highlights a transformation in the technology market, with growing interest in hardware optimized for machine learning and AI applications. According to recent data from Canalys, shipments of AI-enabled PCs totaled 8.8 million units in the second quarter, a significant increase from 4.4 million in the first quarter, accounting for 14 percent of total PC shipments during this period. This trend demonstrates the expansion of the AI segment, with strong demand driving major hardware manufacturers, including AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, to develop more powerful solutions specifically for artificial intelligence. Innovations such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X-series chips, AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 mobile processors, and Intel’s Core Ultra chipset have been key to the recent boom in AI PC sales, contributing significantly to the growth of this segment.

However, the market is uneven: PCs with the macOS operating system dominated with a 60 percent share, while Windows systems, while accounting for 39 percent of sales, saw strong growth in the price ranges above $800, up 127 percent month-on-month. Lenovo, HP and Dell stand out as the leading sellers of Windows-based systems, with market shares of 6 percent, 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively. Models such as the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x and ThinkPad T14, equipped with Snapdragon X-series processors, and HP’s and Dell’s new lines equipped with Core Ultra processors, are among the top products that have contributed to this growth.

PC OEMs are investing significantly in the development and launch of new laptops and mini-PCs equipped with AI processors, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming quarters. As the back-to-school and holiday seasons approach, the market is poised for the introduction of new products that could further solidify AI’s presence in the PC industry. These developments not only reflect a shift in consumer preferences, but also a broader strategy by manufacturers to capitalize on the growing demand for AI capabilities in everyday devices.

These developments indicate an increasing adoption of AI in consumer devices, signaling a significant shift in the dynamics of the technology market and the design of future PCs.
