Intel in Crisis: Drop in Capitalization and Drastic Measures

Key Points:

1. Drastic drop in shares: Intel suffered a 30 percent drop in its stock, the most severe since 1982.
2. Disappointing financial results: Second quarter 2024 results failed to meet analysts’ expectations, with revenues of $12.83 billion.
3. Significant cuts: Intel announced laying off 15,000 employees and reducing dividends to save costs.
4. Technical problems: 13th and 14th generation CPUs suffer from oxidation problems, forcing the company to extend product warranties.

Intel has faced significant challenges in recent times, culminating in recent events that put further pressure on the semiconductor giant. The year 2024 has been a particularly difficult one, marked by a series of financial and technical issues that have deeply shaken investor confidence.

Intel experienced a significant decline in the value of its stock, with a 30 percent drop in a single day, the largest daily drop since 1982. This decline was triggered by disappointing second quarter results: revenue of $12.83 billion, below analysts’ expectations of $12.94 billion. In addition, forecasts for the next quarter were lowered, further exacerbating the situation.

Intel’s financial difficulties have been accompanied by a series of drastic measures to contain costs. These include cutting 15,000 jobs, representing about 13.6 percent of the company’s total workforce. This decision comes on top of the previous 5 percent cut in the workforce last year. In addition, Intel reduced dividends and formalized a $10 billion cost savings plan to improve operational efficiency and market competitiveness.

On the technical front, Intel’s 13th- and 14th-generation CPUs continue to experience oxidation problems due to excessive voltage. This problem has forced the company to release software updates to prevent further damage and to extend warranties on processors not yet affected by the problem from three to five years.

Amid these negative developments, a note of hope comes from NVIDIA. Reports indicate that NVIDIA may be using Intel Foundry Services (IFS) for H100 chip packaging as TSMC fails to fully meet demand. This collaboration could provide an opportunity for Intel to leverage its manufacturing capabilities and mitigate some of the current financial difficulties.

The situation for Intel remains complex and challenging, with the need to respond effectively to internal problems and market dynamics to regain investor confidence and stabilize its position in the technology sector.
